A morning in my life goes something like this…
Get up (aka peel my butt out of bed). Coffee. Hop in the shower. Coffee. Head to my closet. Freak out. I have nothing to wear. I can’t find my purple pants. Where did this shirt come from? Oh my god…I’m still rockin’ the birthday suit, and I have to be at work in 20 minutes. Crappers.
I can’t possibly be the only busy (BUSY) single 30 year old chic on this planet. Those spacious, organized closets you see in style magazines must only exist in dream land right?
While my closet may not be huge, I knew deep down in my soul there was a way to organize a painfully small-city-sized closet so I could get out of the house before lunchtime. So, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, my new reality: closet organization made “boo-hoo” free and budget friendly! Follow these simple steps and you’re on your way to closet bliss.
STEP 1: Take a before pic!
And do not post it to your insta….that closet is scary. Don’t freak the rest of us out. But, the photo will serve as a super useful tool to see the magnificent transformation, and will remind you to keep your closet beast tame.
STEP 2: Purge
Yes. This is a scary word because it means… <dun, dun, dun> to sort and eliminate! Roll up your sleeves friend. This is going to be messy. Ok, but for real, it’s not that bad. Start off with a designated space for all of your items. A nicely made bed works, but I would prefer to start off with some labeled bins. Have one for each: the keepers, the junkers, the donations (because you’re a dang good human being), and one for out-of-season items. And maybe one extra for “how did this thing even get in here.” Now, take a deep breath and start sorting. Personally, I need all the help I can get when deciding to throw away items…I mean I did spend my hard earned dollar bills on these items. Use these little questions to help you:
Is the item even from this decade?? Think about if the piece is even relevant. Those stirrup pants from 1985 are done-zo. God help our society if they come back. You can also use the Discardian trick to help you get rid of the items that don’t get worn.
Does this item fit? I know, I know…one day we are all going to weigh what we weighed in high school again. Except that, in the case of that happening, we all know we’d celebrate with buying new clothes. So just donate the piece already.
Is the item damaged? I’m SO guilty of holding on to damaged clothes. I tell myself that I’ll fix it when I have time. Now, for a really nice/expensive item, this is justified. For a $20 shirt-it’s not. Toss the thang!
STEP 4: CLEAN
At this point, the real toil is over. You were brave. You actually threw stuff out! I’ll pause while you go grab yourself a glass of wine as a reward. … Feel better? Good. Now it’s time to whip out the ole mop and bucket. When was the last time you sanitized your closet?—I’ll go with probably never. Vacuum, dust, change the light bulb that has been burnt out for 2 years so you can give your cellphone flash light a break. (Ok, that last one might just be me…)
STEP 5: PEP TALK
Before I put all my clothes back in the closet, I gave myself a little lecture. Remind yourself that you do NOT want to have to do this again in the near future. Make yourself a little pact to buy less crap, buy quality items, and start being picky. Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean it’s worth it…or fits you.
STEP 6: PUT IT BACK
Set down the bottle of wine already. There’s still work to be done! At this point, I came up with my organizational plan. Are you hanging everything? Adding shelves? Whatever your idea is, make sure that it provides you with the most fluid and easy way to access your clothing. I found that buying matching hangers and nice shelves made the closet look and feel cleaner, making me want to keep it that way. Once, you come up with your mode of attack, put everything away! Organize clothes however you like: by color, style, you chose! If you have limited space, put only spring/summer OR fall/winter in the closet and the alternate season in a tote for storage.

Halloween is approaching, the newest season of Walking Dead is about to begin, and I’m in full resolve that the world will indeed end via a Zombie Apocalypse.
Like, no way. The 90s are totally back–in all their glory. The days when Alicia Silverstone’s character Cher was your fashion idol have…
Smell that kiddos? Ahhh the sweet, sweet aroma of fall is in the air…
