Every year I sit down to write my Christmas list and I can never think of anything to ask for. Gift cards feel like a cop-out but I don’t want to leave the door open for too many possibilities or I’ll end up awkwardly asking for a gift receipt.
If you’re a recent grad or college senior heading in that direction, Christmas is a great opportunity to ask for practical gifts that you’ll actually use. I’m talking about the kind of gifts that would’ve brought 5-year-old-you to tears. You’ll love opening them on Christmas morning probably as much as your parents and family members will love giving them. Nothing makes your mom or grandparents happier than giving you a practical gift that will have you thinking of them every time you use it! That, and you growing up probably makes them pretty happy, too.
So if you’re still stuck on what to ask for this Christmas and grandma is begging you for a suggestion, try a few of these gift ideas that will help you rock that post-grad life.
1. Your Own Netflix Account
If you’re one of those people who is always borrowing other people’s Netflix account, do both them and yourself a favor and ask for your own account for Christmas! Netflix is $8.99/month so you can ask for a specific amount of months depending on what the set spending limit is for your gift exchange.
If you’re not a big Netflix watcher, a great alternative would be to ask for a kickstart in your Amazon Prime or Spotify membership!
If you don’t already have one, a suitcase is a great gift to ask for this Christmas. I would suggest asking for one that will also pass as a carry-on for business trips and weekend getaways. This marble suitcase is easy on the eyes and the perfect size for a weekend away!
If you live somewhere with carpet and you don’t already have a vacuum, this should definitely be on your list. It’s extremely handy to have a vacuum in your apartment or house to clean up any mess – big or small. This vacuum doubles as a portable handheld vacuum, perfect for cleaning out your car or getting the popcorn crumbs out of your couch cushions that escaped from movie night.
Now that you’re an official adult, a blazer should be a staple in your closet. This blazer from White House Black Market is just what you need. It looks perfectly professional with dress pants for an important meeting at work and can be dressed down with jeans a cute top for a night out with your friends.
In college, you probably came home to eat lunch or you grabbed food somewhere on campus in between classes, but now that you’ve got a full-time job and no more campus swipes or flex dollars, it’s time to start packing a lunch again. It gets very expensive very fast when you eat out or order lunch on the reg, so save yourself money and start packing it. With a cute lunch box like this, you’ll be making all the brown lunch bags jealous in the office fridge.
I’m sure all of us had that one Christmas we were kids where we opened socks and had to pretend that we were excited about it. But then all of a sudden, you’re a so-called-adult, and socks are at the top of your list. It didn’t take me long to realize that the more expensive the socks are, the better quality they are also. After a lot of trial and error and cold feet, I can tell you that socks from a company like L.L. Bean won’t disappoint. They’ll keep your toes warm all winter, and the winter after that, and the winter after that….if you’re going to ask for socks, throw your support behind a sustainable brand!
7. In-Soles for Your Shoes
If you’ve got a job that requires you to be on your feet 40 hours a week or be in heels, these are a must. They’ll form to your feet and add a little cushion to each step for those tiring shifts. Dr. Scholl’s knows where it’s at and these will keep your feet happy all day.
8. Crock Pot
Now that you’re at work all day, the last thing you want to do is come home and cook. A crock pot is just what you need! The night before you can prepare a meal and slow cook it while you’re away at work. When you get home, your kitchen will smell wonderful and you’ll have a yummy and warm dinner waiting for you! A big crock pot is also great for providing leftovers for your packed lunch for the next few days.
9. Tool Kit
Nothing says adulting more than a tool kit, am I right? Now that you’re on your own you can’t call up maintenance from your dorm or apartment every time something breaks. A tool kit is the perfect gift that any brother, uncle, or grandpa would be ecstatic to give. While it might take some Googling to figure out when to use each tool, before you know it you’ll be a pro.
10. Extra-Long Phone Charger
These are great gifts for just about anyone, really. It’s always great to have an extra phone charger laying around. Keep your 6-foot charger by your bed and toss your old one in your purse. It will definitely come in handy when your phone is on 5% and you’ve still got 2 hours left at work.
Ah, another gift that probably would have received a forced smile and thank you when you were 10. Whether it’s a thank you card or a thinking of you card, it’s great to have stationary on hand no matter what the occasion. Whether they’re basic or personalized, find a cute print you love and would want to send to all your family and friends!
12. Your Favorite Beauty Products
We’ve all got those beauty products that we use every day and the price can really add up. For me, I use these makeup wipes every single night. Whatever your favorites are, they make great stocking stuffers for Christmas! Whether its makeup wipes or vitamins, add them to your Christmas list and maybe if you’re lucky you won’t need to buy any until next Christmas.
Adulting isn’t easy, especially when you’re still used to the college lifestyle. But Christmas is a great opportunity to ask for some investments that will help ease you into the post-grad life. What else is on your Christmas list? Share with us by tagging us in your posts!
