Yo, I’m Kasper and I work for Hanger as the Fashion Engagement Manager. I don’t work for this company because I just need a job and it pays the bills. I work here because it is changing my life and challenging my perspective of fashion, style, and individuality.
To really understand how Hanger is helping me transform my lifestyle, we need to take it back a couple years to my college graduation.
I was ambitious and hungry to live life and experience a new chapter after almost 17 years of education.
Dancing, singing karaoke, shopping – lots of shopping – traveling, and concerts were just a few of the things I found myself indulging in after graduation. My ambition to grow in my career was equally matched with my enthusiasm for hanging with some rad friends and building a social life that kept my heart full of joy.
During that time I joined a gym and lost my freshman 15 that I steadily maintained over the course of my college career. New body meant new clothes.
My love for fashion grew into an ecosystem of live music, concert T’s and shoes. I absolutely loved the pace of my life and the style I was developing. There was just one problem, I was on a starting salary budget as a Graphic Designer, but living a life that could only be funded by Warren Buffet!
My financial negligence and lack of planning landed me in a world of debt. I was 26, with student loans, a maxed-out credit card, and a new line of credit that would eventually get up into the danger zone.
And the debt wasn’t the worst thing that happened during that time. I created one particularly bad habit: Shopping. Not just any type of shopping either, it was more a form of value hunting.
Every payday I would make the rounds on my favorite shopping sites to see what gems I could find in the sale section. With no consideration of items I already had, I would just buy. If I knew it was a good price – A STEAL – I’d make the purchase and feel like I added something of great value to my life.
The larger the gap of savings, the more satisfied.
“Woah, look at these $1000 Viktor & Rolf heels I got for $175!”
When I would talk to my grandparents about my bargain purchases and how much money I “saved” my Grandfather would always say, “Kasper, it takes money to save money.”
And that is when I started to understand what the word value actually meant.
Ask Yourself – What did it take for me to earn those dollars?
Sure, I “saved” $825, but they were still $175 and I had to earn that money somehow.
As I began my career with Hanger I was still waiting tables for extra cash. Working in a restaurant was what really opened my eyes. I’d go home after a shift of nonstop running my ass off to serve beer after beer and only make $50. Those were the hardest earned dollars and they changed my perspective when spending money on clothes.
For the longest time I made my purchasing decisions by the percentage of savings and NOT based on the value of the money spent – my hard-earned money spent.
When the value of the dollar turned into ‘how many beers I had to serve to earn money’ I started to cherish the money that I used to treat with a disposable attitude.
I also started to see things as payments. I would see a pair of amazing shoes that were only $200 and think, what a steal all the while, I have a loan payment that is $165 that has to be paid every month. Now I ask myself, is that item really worth prolonging the debt I am in?
Most of the time the answer is no. There are very few items out there that hold more value than paying off a student loan or credit card. However, I like to shop and I love fashion so it’s hard to make the “right” choice. With Hanger, I have gained a whole new perspective of the closet I already own.
The visibility I have gained has given me the opportunity to reinvent my style without spending a dime. Now I can keep track of every item I own. Create outfits and plan ahead. Track what I’m wearing which also gives me a breakdown of the price per wear so those $500 shoes I wear all the time don’t seem like such a bad purchase after all. It’s like shopping but in my own closet! Now I am making smarter purchases. If I can offer you any advice to help you learn from my mistakes, stop and really think about what you have.
Be honest with yourself! – Do you really need to keep that one blouse if you never actually wear it?
Consider your current perspective and be open to challenging it. – Sometimes less is more. You don’t have to have that many items to create a lot of outfits.
Download Hanger. – At first, it seems like a commitment but I promise, it’s worth it in the end.
Inspire your friends' style by connecting closets and creating outfits on the Hanger app.

Real Men Have Style Event was co-hosted by Saks 5th Avenue St. Louis and Saint Louis Fashion Fund last night.
