You are now in the home stretch! Hopefully you have a friend lined up who knows your style, a killer music playlist is ready go, and maybe a little champagne in the refrigerator to celebrate when you’re finished.
If you’re taking the time to revamp your style, or define it, or redefine yourself, it’s important to have a way to maintain this new style. Don’t let this style check be a huge shopping splurge with no way to organize what you need, what you should buy, or how you should go about this new or redefined style of yours. I
t’s time to take control of your style and that means being able to manage your closet. So follow along and we’ll help you keep up with that!
During the shoe detox, you started a list of items that you actually need to invest in for spring including colors, styles, and any other notes that will help you next time you’re out shopping. Now we’ll add clothing pieces to that list.
We also talked about three questions that will help guide your purging, so again — think about your lifestyle and answer these three questions:
What items do you like to wear most?
What items do you need to wear? (Does your job require certain clothes? Or an activity you regularly participate in?)
What items are you constantly wishing you had every time you face your closet?
With these questions in mind, let’s get started!
PHASE THREE: THE REAL DEAL
Pull everything out of your closet piece by piece and separate into two piles:
・Love it!・Not sure?・
When everything is pulled out of your closet and you feel like your room is a hot mess, don’t freak out. We promise you will be better than when you started off and you WILL get it all back in there without dying. If this is the time where you need to pour yourself a cocktail, that’s okay, we give you permission. Owning this much stuff is stressful.
The “Love It!” Pile
Let’s start with the easy part – put all the loves back in. Snap a quick picture of each of them as you go. This is the first step to maintaining your closest once it’s back in shape.
Organize them the way that best fits your lifestyle. For example, separate them by clothing type (dress, pant, top, etc.) and then by occasion (dressy vs. casual).
The “Not Sure?” Pile
What you need to remember here is that if you’re not sure – it’s either because it’s not your style, or you don’t have anything to pair it with. A good rule to apply as you clean your closet or even when out shopping, if you can’t answer the question, “Do I love this?” with a resounding “YES!” then don’t buy it.
Whatever you determine is indeed your style, make an outfit with it. This will ensure that you will actually wear these items and they won’t sit in your closet taking up space again for the next year without being worn. Take a picture of each of these items.
