Our spring wish list is always calling to us around this time of the year. Everything is so cute and we’re beyond ready to lock up our winter boots, sweaters and heavy coats. But before we run off to indulge in all things spring, the closet we already have needs some major love. Last week, we introduced the idea of a spring style check as an alternative to spring cleaning. It’s less overwhelming and gives a chance to refine our personal style. Part one was The Quick Cleanse — be sure to check it out and get up to speed! Basically, we eliminated everything we hate from our closets and possibly had a few cocktails along the way when things got tough.
With the “hate its” cleansed, we’re ready for the next phase! Let’s talk shoes. Shoes are bulky and we’re forever trying to find a good way to organize and store them. Yet some of our most prized possessions live in our shoe collections, so let’s give them some love.
Take a step into your closet and pull all of your shoes out. ALL of them – including the ones smashed in the back of the closet that haven’t seen the light of day since high school prom. Yes, those too. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be needing those again. And the sandals with the backs broken down covered in dust bunnies – we know they’re in there!
Pull any shelving out that you’re using for your shoes. Take this time to vacuum out your closet floor. Now let’s go through your shoes and detox a bit.
With shoes, it’s easier to begin with your favorites. First, set aside the shoes you wear most and any shoes that you love.
Next, think about your lifestyle and answer these three questions:
- What shoes do you like to wear most?
- What shoes do you need to wear? (Does your job require certain shoes? Or a sport you play?)
- What shoes are you constantly wishing you had every time you face your closet?
With these thoughts in mind, here are some tips to help you sort through the rest of your shoes:
- You don’t need 12 pairs of black sandals. If you have multiple pairs of shoes in a certain category, just pick your favorite and get rid of the unnecessary.
- Donate anything you haven’t worn in the last year. If it hasn’t been good enough to wear the past year, what’s going to make it good enough to wear this year?
- Off season boots – if you can, store your off-season boots elsewhere. Just snag a photo of them before you store them so you can upload them to your Hanger app and remember them for next season!
- If you have fancy shoes that may only be worn once every few years, you can store those with the off-season boots. Again – take a photo so you remember those beauties, but no need to keep them in your closet taking up space with your daily shoe-wear.
Lastly, this is the time to cut ties with those old sentimental slippers filled with holes from years that include cartoon character faces or bunnies or puppies or cats. I know you love them, but style starts the minute you wake up and that is no way to convey it.
As you’re completing this part of the cleanse, start keeping a list of items that you actually need to invest in for spring. Include colors, styles, and any other notes that will help you next time you’re out shopping.
If you have a great way to store your shoes already, keep it! Organize your shoes back into their place with whatever system works best for you, just keep your most worn easily accessible. If you don’t have a good way to store your shoes, here are a few of our favorite ideas!

Here’s to the season of giving! May we all give more than just another gift this year.
I’m ready to go full cable knits, jeans and combat boots and then Mother Nature is like, “Ha! Here’s a 90-degree day for that cute fall outfit you planned to wear today,” and I’m forced to dip back into my summer stuff.
Your bestie just got engaged and you’re so happy for her, but now the pressure is on to make this the time of her life.
Last minute Father’s Day gifts that will also help dad out a little in the style arena. Making style suggestions via gift is much easier than trying to reason with him to change his clothes before leaving the house next time.
You taught me a lot of lessons growing up, like how to use a hammer, how to change my tire, and how to keep the boys away. But of all the lessons you taught me, my favorite is one that no instruction manual could have provided.
If someone called you now and said pack your bags we’re leaving on vacation tomorrow, could you be ready? Or would sheer panic set in because your mind immediately goes to OMG I have nothing to wear? Here’s how Hanger freed me from last-minute vacation-packing panic.
Summer has unofficially begun and that means it’s time to get your summer closet in shape. As you switch your closet over from spring to summer, it’s the perfect time to download the Hanger app!
